Laptop docking and Wifi in Sydney

Since I moved to Sydney, I have been trying to find the most cost effective way to work in Sydney.

I have been dissappointed to find most Internet Cafe’s won’t allow you to dock a laptop.

There is free wifi in Starbucks and McDonald’s, but the shortage of power supplies and general atmosphere make it unattractive for prolonged time.

I was delighted to find the main library has free wifi. I got a good bit done on a Saturday, but then on Monday, I did as much as I usually would do in 30 minutes due to the bandwidth being overloaded.

There are other libraries around that may be worth checking out, but I expect that they too will not allow you to connect to port 21 on a server, meaning you can’t do ftp-ing. You can work around this with SSL and file manger, but it’s not an ideal situation for my preferences.

I decided to collect a few Internet Cafe phone numbers and ring around to see who would allow me to dock my laptop there. I got 2 positive response of the 10 I phoned:

  • Central Internet cafe (230 Elizabeth St – 92819988). 9 hours which must be used at once is 10 dollars
  • Global Gossip (790 Georges St – 92124444). $15 for 24 hours, $50 for 7 days, $150 for 30 days.

I have been using Global Gossip for the last few days and find tthe chairs comfortable and there’s a bright, pleasant, general atmosphere.

Most importantly the connection is great and I’ve had no limitations in connection.

Although I am using my laptop, I’ve used their machines a few times and they’re great!
